Chanel Classic Flap Bag V.S. Reissue 2.55

One very commonly asked question about Chanel is on the difference between the Chanel Classic Flap and the Chanel Reissue 2.55 bags. I’ve scoured the forums this morning to educate myself, and our readers about the differences between the two. Let me start with a few historical facts on the Reissue.

HISTORY:

The lock on the Reissue is the original lock, it is called the Mademoiselle Lock as Ms Coco Chanel never married, the ‘CC’ lock was introduced to the Classic Flap Bags only in the 1980s by designer Karl Lagerfeld. The 2.55 in its name refers to the first release of the 2.55 bag in February of 1955. Coco Chanel grew up in an orphanage/convent, therefore, the double chain shoulder strap comes from when the children’s’ caretakers in the orphanage would dangle keys from their waists with the same type of chains as on the Reissue. Also, the zippered compartment on the inside of the front flap of the Reissue is where Coco sequestered her love letters, as she was having an affair at that time. The brownish red color of the inside represents the color of Coco and the rest of the children’s uniforms (the nuns’ were black with white trim: thus, the packaging on Chanel Parfum/Eau de Parfum/Eau de Toilette). The back outside flap of the Reissue actually marks where Coco would stash extra money!

Over the years there have been many variations to the original design of the 2.55, including the leather/fabric, the chain – metal vs. interwoven leather, single flap vs. double flap, and the closure – mademoiselle vs. interlocking CC. The 2.55 refers to all flap-style bags, including variations of the original! The term classic flap commonly refers to the flap with the interlocking CC closure and the leather interwoven chain.

In February 2005, Karl Lagerfeld re-made the 2.55 – exactly as Coco Chanel had made in 1955, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 2.55. It came to be known as the Reissue. Technically the term Reissue should only be used for the bags that were made to commemorate the original – so only those in 2005. However, it has become convenient to call all 2.55s that resemble the original 2.55 Reissues and all 2.55s that have the interlocking CCs Classic Flaps.

THE DIFFERENCES:

1. Closure/Locks: Classic has the double CC turn-style lock, the Reissue has the Mademoiselle lock (rectangular shape).
2. The handle: The reissue has an all chain handle, while the classic has leather interwoven between the chain links.
3. Reissue has a different type of leather, that is made to seem more worn than the caviar leather on the classics.
4. All the reissues have a double flap inside, whereas the Jumbo Classic does not.
5. The sizes on the Reissue are different than the sizes on the Classic Flaps.

French Police Bust Fake Hermes Syndicate

Paris-based luxury brand Hermes has teamed up with French police to dismantle an €18-million (US$22.7 million) international counterfeit handbag syndicate, arresting a dozen company staff believed to have been leaking designs and manufacturing secrets to the criminal operation.

On Thursday Hermes, one of the most popular luxury brands in China, announced it had teamed up with local police to bust a crime ring that specialized in counterfeiting the iconic brand’s handbags. Two Hermes staff have been sacked and 12 others have been arrested in the company’s offices in Paris and Lyon on suspicion of being involved. Police also uncovered several clandestine factories and seized 20 cubic meters of bags and raw materials.

A large number of international bank accounts said to hold hundreds of thousands of euros have been linked to the syndicate, including 22 accounts from Hong Kong and three from Cyprus.

French police launched an investigation into the counterfeit syndicate after Hermes appealed for help last November. The high-fashion luxury goods manufacturer assisted in the probe by using its internal monitoring systems to detect unusual behavior among staff.

Authorities believe the syndicate had been operating across Europe, the United States and Asia, and in recent years expanded to making sales on the internet. France’s national anti-counterfeiting committee estimates that counterfeit goods cost the local economy €6 billion (US$7.46 billion) a year, and between 30,000 and 40,000 jobs.

The bust comes about two weeks after France launched a new anti-counterfeiting advertising campaign, which ran slogans such as “Buy a fake Cartier, get a genuine criminal record.”

Hermes CEO Patrick Thomas has been critical of internet retailers, search engines and social media websites, saying they have fostered the rapid growth of counterfeit goods and distribution channels worldwide. Thomas estimates that 80% of Hermes products sold on the internet are fake.

2012 Rising Star: Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas Olympe

I guess most people get bored with the boring oxydizing leather trimmed around the classic Monogram canvas, and what wears our patience is the oxydizing process, which is gonna take months. And when it finally gets the tan color, God knows if you are gonna like the bag or not.

However, the Toron handles and trimmings in the mature camel color make all the difference. At the first sight, you will have the conclusion that this bag is gonna be awesome, not to mention that this bag has a most decent name: the Olympe.

The design of Louis Vuitton Olympe Bag was inspired from Louis Vuitton’s luxury tradition. The decent Monogram Canvas and the lamskin combines together perfectly, while the shining hardware sharpens Louis Vuitton Olympe’s elegant looking.  It’s made from monogram canvas and lamskin leather, still with natural cowhide trim in brown. The iconic Toron double handles, solid and rolled by leather, are what makes it outstanding. Then it’s the classic Charniere gold brass lock. Fuctional as all Louis Vuitton bags, it has two pockets outside, a bigger one in front, while the other zipped one back, and two main individual compartments interior with four flat pockets and one zipped pockets. The lining is made of soft microfiber. Here is a look of the inside:

Wonder about the size? Well, it’s quite a moderate fit-for-all bag: 14.6 x 6.7 x 9.5 inches, or 37 x 17 x 24 cm. Even for the price of $3,500, the Olympe bag has already been sold out in Louis Vuitton online store.

PS: Besides the more popular camel color,  it’s also available in bordeaux. What do you say?

Prada Saffiano Lux Tote Never Lets You Down

I love when Prada sticks to what it is good at: clean lines, great leather and fabulous color. I have to say, I came across the Prada Saffiano Lux Tote today and let out a sigh of relief.

Actually, I’ve seen this bag before, but I forgot about it. So, when I came across it again, all I can say is BRAVO Prada, BRAVO! Unfortunately, I’ve come across too many Prada bags that have missed the mark lately. In fact, they’ve missed the mark so much that I virtually stopped looking at them. Today folks, today is a different day.

This classy bag comes in both blue and red leather – so take your pick! I am more into the blue, but that is my preference. The tonal topstitching adds a hint of texture but it is the golden hardware that absolutely has me captivated. I love how the hardware runs from the handles onto the top of the bag so gracefully. The hardware isn’t too chunky nor is it too flimsy. More than anything, the bag is classic, it is timeless and it is elegant. Everything about it is luxurious and I would starting looking at Prada handbags more often if they kept up with their strengths.

Check out Prada’s Spring 2012 ads!

We love a good ad campaign around these parts. Because most brands rely on accessories (as well as cosmetics and fragrance) to make ends meet, ads often put the bags and leather goods that we’re most interested in seeing front and center in a way that the runway never does. Prada’s ads are always reliably lovely, and the campaign for Prada Spring 2012 features my favorite of the collection’s runway bags – the framed satchel!

You have two eyes, so I’m sure you can tell that these photos were shot at a service station as an homage to the 1950s greasers and car culture that inspired the clothes. Fashionista.com tells us that Steven Meisel shot five models for the campaign, most notably Natasha Poly, and the results are good, clean Americana fun. Check out two more shots after the jump.

Louis Vuitton Mens’ Spring/Summer 2012 Collection

A journey, both literal and metaphorical, is at the heart of Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. “At its simplest level, it is about the idea of travel and what it means at this point in time,” explains Kim Jones, the Men’s Style and Studio Director, who will sign his debut collection for Louis Vuitton under the Artistic Direction of Marc Jacobs. “Afterall travel forms the foundation of the brand. This is a fundamental part of the lineage and language of Louis Vuitton and is a central component of what it stands for today,” continues Jones. “At the same time, the collection is looking at the idea of a personal journey. It forms the notion of a coming-of-age through exploration and travel.”

This season sees a focus on the insouciant, practical and luxurious style of a modern global traveller. It takes into account both an appreciation for traditional garments and a contemporary approach to dress and spans the divide between the two.

Male supermodel Werner Schreyer stars in this season’s Ad Campaign and catalogue shot by Alasdair McMellan in the African Safari.

Coach 70th Anniversary Collection

Coach has been paying close attention to its traditional techniques and craftsmanship. Recently, Coach has released a collection for its 70th anniversary. The Madison that trimmed with genuine leather and Lindsey bag that sewed with V patterns are the perfect examples representing Coach classic making. Inspired by the ski shirt in 1970s, some traditional elements have been put into Coach new items, but some innovations were also adopted, like the V patterns which come with the special features. Blazing details and multidimensional texture make the bags impressive, at the same time, reddish auburn and rose are another two attractive colors for autumn. The outline of Madison Caroline is fused with dowel from Coach briefcase. This collection is crafted from embossed python and crocodile leather with light and dark color in contrasting effect, which is appealing and classy.

Yves Saint Lauret Cabas Chyc Bag in Glamorous Purple

Yves Saint Lauret released a Cabas Chyc Bag in its Fall/Winter 2011 collection, which comes in various vibrant colors. Among all, this glamorous purple is the one I love most! Purple is an elegant color that is not easy to drive. In design, YSL Cabas Chyc Bag is simple and fashionable. With double zippers and a chic logo “Y” on the front, the bag is with all the distinctive details, making it not simply a good-looking item, but also a practical one. The front pockets will definitely help you a lot in daily life because it enables you to get the stuff inside the bag easier and faster. Besides, this roomy sized bag is designed to be an ideal essential that perfectly meets all the ladies’ needs. I think it’s hard to find another bag that is comparably classy and appealing like this one.

Miu Miu Fall/Winter Collection: Miu Miu Frame Bag

Soon after the ad promo of Miu Miu new bag being officially shown on Miu Miu website, this new series of bag instantly becomes the hot topic and is favored by many people. Miu Miu Frame Bag impeccably crafted from supple lambskin, imitated chamois leather with textural stingray splendidly arrives and comes with optional variations on its website. Miu Miu Frame Bag has a handy removable chain-strap that is connected by chain and leather, this makes carrying the bag more comfortable. The overall design is simple, but it beautifully exudes an amazing outline that looks good and pleased. This Frame Bag from Miu Miu Fall/Winter collection will be offered in multiple colors such as pink, violet, fuchsia, orange and blue etc.

Bags in Sharp Colors Catch Our Eyes

If you are keen on the bag in sharp color or with special features to show your individuality, but you don’t want something over-exaggerating anyway, some vibrant colored bags such as pink and green must be your “secret weapons” that are second to none. Whether in sweet pink, energetic green, bright yellow or enthusiastic red, every one of these bags will definitely break your dreary mood and turn you to a fashionista at once.

When choosing the vibrant colored bags, you should be cautious about the matching of your outfit as well. Try not to choose the color that is close to your bag because it will only screw up everything. Contrast color is the best, or black, white and grey will be fine as well. Well, I think this is a test to show how gifted you are in fashion.
